TAKING A LIFE:
Counseling Those who have Killed other People
A Practical Skills Development Seminar focusing on providing counseling skills in the psychological, social and spiritual aspect of working with those who have killed others in battle, in accidents, and with intention.
With David Parke, CCE-BCC and Richard Nongard, LMFT
The problem in defense is how far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without. ~Dwight D. Eisenhower
The client who has killed, is a client that every therapist will encounter. As a nation at war, we are a nation with many who have returned home after taking the life of an opposing soldier. In dealing with drug and alcohol offenders, we frequently encounter those who have killed on the highways we drive to work. Other clients have taken a life in self-defense, and yet others who have taken a life with malevolence./p>
Although the psychology of killing, and the emotional, spiritual and social aspects of killing have been researched, very few training sessions focus on the mental health professionals role and the therapeutic methods of addressing killing in social work and counseling.
This workshop is essential for anyone working with veterans, in substance abuse treatment or the criminal justice setting. By attending this seminar you will learn:
How to identify the praxeological needs of clients who have killed.
Strategies for supporting those who have taken a life in the line of duty.
Techniques for stabilizing the family systems of those who have killed.
When processes of forgiveness therapy and grief resolution are beneficial and when they are contraindicated.
You will leave this workshop with specific skills, therapeutic and spiritual processes you can utilize with clients who have killed other people.
This seminar is a practical training resource, designed to provide a foundation for dealing with a topic that is often overlooked in traditional counseling, and perhaps in the elephant in the therapy room, in many counseling settings.
This workshop will equip you with evidenced-based treatment protocols, and these methods will be demonstrated in the context of providing social work, counseling and other professional services.
