TITLE: Conversational Hypnosis and Neuroplasticity Training in Working with Chronic Pain and Somatoform Disorders About the Presenters: Michael Ellner, CHT, MSH and Dr. Richard Nongard, LMFT Michael Ellner has been a course director and faculty member of PAINWEEK, the annual Medical Conference for frontline pain Clinicians (2007-2012). He is a Diplomat of the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association (IMDHA) and is the lead author of a peer-reviewed paper: Hypnosis in Disability [Pain] Settings (IAIABC Journal, Vol. 46 No. 2) Ellner is the co-author of Hope is Realistic: A Physician's Guide to Helping Patients Take Suffering Out of Pain and the HOPE Coaching Practitioner's Guidebook with Kelley T. Woods and Alan Barsky. Dr. Richard Nongard, LMFT, CCH is a California Approved Provider of CEUs (Peachtree Professional Education, Inc.). He is the Founder/Director of the International Certification Board of Clinical Hypnotherapy (ICBCH). Nongard is the author of Medical Meditation: How to Reduce Pain, Decrease Complications and Recover Faster from Surgery, Disease and Illness in addition to many books on hypnosis. Both Ellner and Nongard are known internationally as pioneers in conversational hypnosis and mindfulness training and are highly regarded Hypnosis Educators and Practitioners. Workshop Description: In theory and practice conversational hypnotic affect regulation techniques, and self-directed neuroplasticity exercises help people living with chronic pain and/or somatoform disorders change their minds, emotional states and physiology as they learn how to re-wire their brains for health and healing. When you utilize what you have learned in this 6-hour workshop your patients/clients will experience improved moods, less pain and suffering, more energy, less anxiety, improved sleep and digestion as well as improved immune system functioning. The workshop will cover: 1. Conversational Hypnosis 2. Plasticity Exercises 3. Self-Hypnosis Training 4. Mindfulness Training 5. Motivation Putting it all together Becoming more resilient is simply a matter of conditioning. We know that two people who are faced with the same stressful situations can react very differently. One may fall apart and become incapacitated by the challenge it presents while the other is calm and peaceful. New research demonstrates that the difference in their reactions lies in their prior conditioning and internal mental connections. The great news is that learning and practicing intentional relaxation, mindfulness and/or self-hypnosis are fast, effective ways to help patients and/or clients change their internal reactions to what is happening to them, so they can deal with life's related challenges more efficaciously. It's really true, learning and practicing intentional relaxation, mindfulness and/or self-hypnosis can help your patients/clients change their inner-connections and keep their cool when having to deal with a wide range of stressors and demands. Instead of feeling pressured, they can sense an excitement. Instead of feeling anxious or afraid, they can sense practical action and confidence. Long term change is established as soon as these mental re-connections are operating automatically, i.e., once their internal representations (of what each stressor means to them) are in place and operating automatically, they can feel challenged by stressful situations without stressing themselves or feeling anxious. This is why teaching and motivating patients/clients to de-stress by practicing intentional relaxation and imagery on a daily basis supplements the work that you do. You are increasing the patients/clients coping skills and abilities and potentiating long-term change by reinforcing their inner-connections. The goal is help the patient/client rewire their brains to automatically react in healthier ways. Participants will learn: Conversational Hypnotic techniques and Neuroplasticity and Mindfulness Training exercises for assisting patients/clients suffering from chronic pain and/or somatoform disorders as newly defined in DSM-5. After completing this activity participants will be able to: • Discuss the relationship between Pain and Suffering • Discuss the relationship between Emotional Affects and Somatoform Disorders • Describe how to model client/patient language to enhance rapport • Better assist their chronic pain and/or somatoform patients/clients utilizing simple conversational hypnotic techniques • Better assist their chronic pain and/or somatoform patients/clients utilizing simple mindfulness techniques • Teach their patients/clients a basic self-hypnosis technique • Teach their patients/clients a basic mindfulness meditation technique • Better assist their chronic pain and/or somatoform patients/clients by teaching their patient/clients basic plasticity exercises. • Review how descriptive treatment communication can maximize patient/client involvement as it relates to homework and self-care Accreditation for Attendees: MFTs, LPCs, LCSWs, and Nurses will be eligible for 6 hours of CEU credit for attending this workshop.
